Finding a lump under the skin is always worrying. In many cases it is a lipoma, a benign lesion that can be removed with a simple procedure.
What is a lipoma?
A benign lump that grows under the skin and can be seen from outside. In most cases it is made of accumulated fatty tissue. It usually grows slowly but steadily and can reach a size that becomes bothersome. It appears most often on the neck, shoulders, back, arms and thighs.
It does not usually hurt, but it can be uncomfortable and limiting.
How is it removed?
- First consultation: the specialist examines the area and the size of the lipoma and explains the process.
- Procedure: under local anaesthetic, a small incision is made with a scalpel and the lipoma is removed together with its capsule, so that it does not grow back and is removed completely.
- No hospital stay: you do not need to stay in hospital. The procedure takes about 60 minutes.
